OUIL603 - Own Briefs & Projects

I've already been working on a number of self-set projects over the summer, that had branched off from ideas or work i had developed earlier on in my degree, and i chose these with a mind to carry some of these themes on as my part of my extended practice module, developing them further on various platforms.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

• OOGAH! •
mask design project

This has been my analogue, handmade project that've been adding to regularly over the summer, producing work an a5 sketchbook, a3 paper, canvas and large scale cardboard paintings. Mainly as way to get me making images using brush and paint techniques to make something tangible. The 'oogah' mask characters are all fairly uncomplicated shaped based designs, that i designed to be produced both a digital and anagloue level. Some of them i had intended to take into aftereffects and make them animated in After Effects, which was something that was suggested i explore after my exploits with my Process & Production module last year. I've yet to sit down and really get back into After Effects as i didn't want to spend hours in front of a Mac screen, but away from technology and making live, with my hands!

There was no real context or concept behind this project, other than my keen interest in tribal masks/face paints, patterns, shapes and producing some sort of 'product' in a number of mediums. The introduction of comic book/film/tv characters was an effort to make them more marketable.

• DISMANTIPPLES •
deconstructed beverages/cocktail recipes

Another project that started as a sketchbook doodle last summer that i never pursued due to other coursework, but i went back to it this summer and developed it into a somewhat finished project. My progress was seriously halted by the loss of all the digital files and development work i done up to that point, but I'd like to pick up where i left off in order to make a series of dismantled cocktails images, which are basically designs showing popular cocktails, and their  ingredients, in an eye catching composition. Also, they have the recipe featured along the bottom so they're also a 'make your own' cocktail guide..?! The idea behind this was also to give me something that i could animate. The bold, blocky graphics would give me something to work with in After Effects that i could give simple movements to, creating a moving 'make your own' cocktail guide. Why grown-ups would need a cartoon helping them to make 'Screwdrivers' and 'Bloody Mary's' I'm not quite sure at this point.

Then again, 'grown ups' are making colouring books all the rage at the moment, so why not give them some booze gifs as well?

• SWEET YOOTH •
confection recollection

This was/is a project i was doing as a way of getting me doing screen printing on a regular basis during the summer - but as the studio shut in August i couldn't do a whole lot. It was a revisiting and development of a typology project from Level 4 involving an A-Z of sweets i had fond memories of from growing up. I went back and altered a number of the designs, and set them up as 2/3/4 colour screen print deigns ( as the originals were only allowed to be monotone). Again, the designs were pretty simple and graphical looking, something that i could make digitally and replicate using analogue methods. I've recently got to thinking that these designs could also work as little animations, to give them another platform to be viewed on.

Other Spectulative Self initiated projects for the Module

Live Brief: Drawlloween 2016

An online media  based 'drawing-a-day' project, for the whole of October, where amazingly enough you are given a list of spooky/horror based things to draw! Not much to it i know, but it's the sort of project that will allow me to continue drawing 'live' and will require me to think fast and work fast in order to get each item drawn - and at the end will leave me a selection of 31 images that may sprout new ideas, or a series or may just be suitable as portfolio pieces, depending on how well they come out. Theres a couple of varying lists, both with similar Halloween themes objects on them, not sure if theres an 'official' Drawlloween page?Nothing to get too serious about, as i can leave that to the other live briefs from D&AD et all…!

Live Briefs: D&AD

Obviously the given briefs for the upcoming year aren't announced until Novemeber, but after opting for the more 'open' briefs in general last year (Secret 7", Shutterstock) which backfired for me personally,  i thought i would tackle a project that had more rigid guidelines, and a clearer idea of what was expected. Hopefully there'll be one or two that from companies that will appeal to me. Not much i can say on this one until Novemeber 1st then….but i WANT ONE OF THEM PENCILS!!

• LAINEY'S BAKEHOUSE •
Company logo/branding for web & print project

This is a nice little commission I've just picked up in the last couple of days - just been finalising quotes and finer details etc, but it's looks to be a goer, and real fun! It's for a small novelty cake and sweet treat making company, who are just starting out as a full time venture. They're after some character design/type treatment/logo design to go on the website, on any awnings that will get printed for market stalls, go on business cards and stickers for taping up cake boxes, generally all their promo material in various forms. They're looking to get going by the end of the year, so are in no rush for anything just yet, and I've explained my situation with uni, but also how this could fit in with my extended practice work. Having recently completed some 'cutsie' character design work for MultiSport i feel this is within my powers - they want it "to have a personal feel and be approachable and fun" which, although i seem to be fighting against the fun, personal feel, maybe i should be embracing a bit more, especially if it pays. (What a sell out!)

• ADIDAS ORIGINALS •
Tracksuit/sports wear graphics

Since i was 10/11 i always wanted to design football kits, i'd spend my camping holidays sketching up 3-striped kit templates, and always wondered how the hell you get into designing football kits for the big boys. Do you need a degree in Fashion, or Graphic Design,or both,or none..? Along with a lot of career dreams (wwf wrestler make-up & wardrobe technician), i never looked into it further - not even when the internet came along in the late 90's, but love of retro kits and patterns still remains - and this summer my fire was reignited by some of the Adidas Originals designs. Now i don't know what design credentials or Rita Ora or Phrarell Willaims have ( they might have loads, i don't know) or how much input they have, but but some of the ridiculous and ordinary crap that the Pharell line came out with makes me think,"not a whole lot".

That said i did buy a fair bit of other 'Originals' clobber during the summer, all them have a nod to 80's & 90's sportswear design.

Getting to design 80's style (or any) graphics on clothes for a sportswear giant would be another 'worldy' of a job, which i realise, honestly isn't that likely to happen - but hearing about Joe Sheils (Level6) getting hook-ups with Nike & Umbro since graduating does give a me flicker of hope still. If i could come up with a theme or concept then i could set about creating a set of designs and mocks on various Adidas products, as if it was a real commission.

• COLLABERATION NATION •

Collaberation Nation is an international collaborative art project for artists, illustrators & doodlers from all creative backgrounds.

Each artist taking part starts a drawing and then sends it on to the next artist for them to add to the piece. This continues until 4 artists in total have collaborated on a drawing, a process which produces exciting works of art and sometimes brilliantly unpredictable results.

The project aims to create a link between the different scenes within the art world by involving artists from all backgrounds; from illustrators and graphic artists to graffiti and street artists. Up-and-coming artists and professional doodlers are all involved which presents the opportunity for a diverse group of individuals to work together in creating vivid and exciting pieces of collaborative art.

It appeared like its an ongoing project, and to get involved you have to email them - so i don't know how you are judged worthy to join beyond that, but as i haven't really had much of an opportunity to collab with someone of my choosing, or simiar tastes in illustration then this might be a good way of getting in contact with some artists who are?also as a lot of them are also spray paint and mural-type artists it could be a way to get an introduction into that sort of work..?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

• CRAFT BEER/ MICRO-BREWERIES •
Bottle & Can label illustrations

Having made comprehensive list of uk based craft beer companies who all have eye-catching packaging graphics, many featuring hand drawn illustration - i sent out a number of emails enquiring how they go about commissioning artists to feature on their products. Although I'm not a drinker of the stuff myself, they are massively popular at the moment, especially down in my neck of the woods , along with all the beards and tattoos. Whether  this, along with the stupid beards is just a passing fad time will tell  - but it would be a good avenue to try and aim my artwork into. Like the hypothetical Adidas brief above, i would need to come up my own concept, or theme and mock it up as if would be proposing it to an actual existing company.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

• GROWN-UP COLOURING BOOK •

Along with the beards & craft beer, colouring books for grown-ups have become somewhat of a craze it seems - which has totally gone under my radar and i had to be informed by one of my mates back home, who has a few in her possession, largely untouched. The idea is that grown-ups are turning to the soothing art of colouring in intricately designed books, some created specifically to help you de-stress and focus the mind. One created a while back by MegaMunden first caught my eye, which featured tattoo flash designs to fill in, but more often than not they feature animals, flowers, swirly pattens and Eddie Redmayne..?

So i guess the trick would be in finding a subject matter or concept that people would find appealing, or entertaining to colour in.
