We are Boutique - Mural Design Brief...

I wasn't expecting such a quick response to the mural submissions, so hadn't checked my emails but when i did;

I've only gone and bloody won it! Which is amazing obviously, but now ive got work out a way to actually paint this thing - i was already in the mode that i would've have to worry about it as someone else's design had won. But im already having to consider how best to transfer my image on the wall, and how much paint or how many posca pens i'll need? I mean its only a relatively small area to paint, so i cant imagine it would take that much paint, but i dont want to get caught out and look like an absolute rookie, which is exactly what i am!

Ive spoken to a few mates with mural mapping out equipment, which i was looking to borrow - but none of them gave the ma very good review. Tom O' Connor has the old traditional approach; some 'pouncing' equipment, where you perforate your image into paper using a pouncer wheel, then dab chalk through the paper, onto the wall which leaves your outlines. Emily on the other hand has a little projector, but doesn't rate it = she did suggest going down to the photography studio and enquiring about proper projectors down there, which might be my best bet. Not sure what my other options would be to be honest.

I've kept in touch muralist Pete Barber (who i worked with over the summer) and tapped him up for some pointers about how he might approach it, so i'll see what he says about it. WAB haven't given me a 'GO' date yet, so until I'm actually physically there, painting it I'm not going to get carried with thinking about buying gold crowns and fur coats with my winnings just yet...

We Are Boutique - Mural Design Brief

With COP gone, gone gone, and a blessed respite from 'Out Of Order' promo producing duties (until the flyers turn up) I'm finally, able to get back on the road with the Extended Practice module; picking up with mural design brief from We Are Boutique in Leeds.

I'd been making little compositional sketches for a few days, but it was very on & off as I kept getting pulled away to sort out work for the comic fair and out of order.

The good thing about this brief is how clear in their minds they are about what they're after; white and sketchy, with wood in it. For me this a plus point, as gives me no room to muck about endlessly with loads of colour variants and detailed vectors. If the design is chosen,I need to be able to replicate the design onto a wall, via a paint brush/paint pen, including any type I include; so the simpler the better. The other slightly scary factor is that i've never painted anything bigger than A3, so would need to seek some advice on how best to transfer the design no onto the wall and ready for painting.

I can cross that bridge if i come to it, but i figured if i ever wanted to gain some solo mural painting experience i need to just go for it, rather than worry about the fact that I've never done one before!

My design journey and process is documented below...

Other less enjoyable work commitments getting in the way of this one led to be a quite a last minute submission job, but an all night session was NOT required (just most of the night). It took a bit to get my head around working on a black surface as i'm someone who works pretty much exclusively with big heavy black outline work, so it wasn't a simple case of scanning and 'inverting' in Photoshop. I'm happy with the results. Feels weird to be able to walk away from it at the (for me) 'sketch' stages, without taking the design into Illustrator and vectoring the bejesus out of it.

Now an anxious wait to hear if i actually have to go ahead and try and paint the damn thing!
