Visual Language - Drawing from Reference

Ok, a first for me today...drawing with a brush and ink, as ridiculous as that may sound!
Coming from a strictly pencil and digital background this was new, scary and at many times frustrating territory.(results below) Trying to draw/paint space hopper from a reference photo probably wasn't the ideal choice on my part neither.

This is the most embarrassing & amateurish
image I've ever produced.

Followed closely by this.

After painting these i was seriously wandering "what the hell am i doing here,
I'm out of my depth. I'm gonna get found out!"
Looking back, probably a bit of an over reaction to my ink & brush maiden voyage.

To me, as someone who works largely with reference photos & collages, 'drawing from reference' has always meant a way of capturing a personally uncapturable scene or object. I'll always go to lengths to get a specific body shot or pose if I can, but it's not always possible, so using a photo of the desired object is sometimes the quickest and only option. Not to spend hours and hours trying to achieve a photographic likeness of it but more to get a rough, basic shape down on paper which then leaves me room to modify, add detail, fit around other objects etc. Then hopefully in the future that image will be vaguely locked into my brain and i wont be so reliant on finding such a specific image or pose. In theory.
