About the Author - PROGRESS CRIT/PEER FEEDBACK

Really wasn't looking forward to this. My sketchbook work was on the 'light' side to say the least as i just wasn't getting to grips with this brief at all, so much so that I've pushed it to one side in favour of my zine work, which id also been struggling for inspiration with but was making slightly better headway with, but thats not saying much. However, realising that the zine project isn't getting assessed as such, i need to focus more on this brief.

Coming out of the peer crit i found myself feeling a bit less stressed than when i went in. Turns out plenty of class are in a similar position regarding what and what not to draw in order to not be too literal or cliched. I enjoyed looking through their sketchbooks too, to see their thought processes and how they'd tackled working on their particular. They'd produced a whole lot more development and experimentation work than myself however, still a big weakness in my game, and was a bit embarrassed with my feeble attempts. Received  some encouraging words of advice from them swell, which ill take on board as i try to work out where I'm going with this.

WHAT DO YOU THINK WORKS WELL?

I've been focusing on the little 'unimportant' details of the story and making images about them rather than the major events and happenings of the novel, in an attempt to come up with some less obvious imagery. I'll capitalise on this with continued investigation and reading into the strange or quirky aspects of Murakami's book/s.

WHAT DO YOU THINK COULD BE IMPROVED?

Where do i start?! Churn out lots more ideas, in imagery form. In previous chats with Teresa and Ben they've encouraged me to find a subject no matter how relevant and just draw it over and over, loosely, which I'm always hesitant at doing as it feels like I'm wasting time drawing things badly, that i may never look at again. Be less literal. Stop constantly thinking about what the 'right' or 'wrong' way to tackle this project is. I'll benefit from this as making more images will give me a larger amount of material to work with and develop or to chuck in the bin.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO DIFFERENTLY NEXT TIME?

I would try harder to read more material by Murakami. Even with the audiobook to assist i struggle to maintain ant sort of attention span. If i got myself educated in more of Murakami's novels it would give me a better idea of what else happens in his other stories, rather than basing my work on just this one novel, and the opinions of others who have read more.

WHAT HAVE I LEARNED BY RESPONDING TO THIS BRIEF & WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

1: I've learnt that I'm a very literal thinker (more than i already thought) when it comes to being given a design brief. I need to be more metaphorical, which could lead to to more interesting ideas and results.

2: I've learnt that i need to produce more visual ideas, even they suck balls, as i may find something decent amongst it all that i could work with. If i don't i'll end up having only a very limited amount of material, and may have to just go with an idea that i know to be weak but have no better options.Which in turn would require me to produce the final piece to a high craft standard without really having much of a concept. Style over substance, which I'm bloody great at, but i would rather it be a bit more of a level playing field regarding the final output of my work.

3: Ive learnt, or will learn, to not give up on a particular train of thought so quickly, just because i don't think people will 'get it' or it doesn't make sense! If i stick at it a bit longer rather than worry if what I'm doing is right or not , then it may very well lead to unexpected & successful results & push me into new directions.

WHAT HAVE YOU GAINED FROM THE PEER FEEDBACK SESSION?

Getting to see and speak to classmates (who i'd otherwise have little contact with on the whole, what with our own varied studio working hours) about their own work and approach has been really useful. Hearing what they've had troubles and successes with, and how they gone about presenting their ideas was also helpful. It largely set my mind at rest that I'm not the only one in the class doesn't have a clear idea of what or where they're heading with it all. As we said to each other, we've only actually been back and working on it for a couple of weeks, it just feels way longer!
